a fashion statement inspired by britney spears’ scandals.

gimme more (scandals)

How you build yourself isn't always pretty; it can be messy and that process is no one else's business. We are exploring the process of finding comfort in being fully yourself. We tend to define ourselves by the morals we are taught (via fairy tales, our parents, headlines, etc.) but there comes a time when we realize we don't have to fit into those molds. Breaking free from these constraints will inherently be a scandal and offend people or make them unhappy - and it's okay; it's leading you closer to yourself.

Headlines are modern day fairy tales - it is how we process morality today. The morals they teach aren't always right. We should feel more empowered to push against them and be unafraid of setting boundaries, breaking social norms, and following your personal moral compass.

We chose Britney Spears as the inspiration for our concept because she is an internationally recognized figure who’s life has been highly documented in a variety of mediums. Her scandals were a vehicle for us to dive deeper into this concept.

Assignment
Find a theme related to the fashion world and use narrative, styling and art direction as a vehicles to make a statement. The objective is to create a fashion narrative to be told in static and moving images. The narrative must be told using photography, editorial format of your choosing and an audiovisual fashion teaser shot on a cellphone. This will then be concluded in a 20 minute presentation.

Part of this experience also includes a one hour photoshoot where groups must work with a professional model in a studio - these images do not have to be used in the final results but helps gain experience working in these environments.

INDIVIDUALIZING IS A SCANDALOUS ACT.

Teaser

Our video features a Britney fan around 18-23 years old. She’s been molded by others and societal expectations to behave and look a certain way; but remembering Britney’s scandals she’s had enough. She pushes those influences to the side and begins to act and dress how she wants. In doing so she knows she’ll create a reaction but doesn’t care because she’s being her true self. Video editing by Simòn Olives.

Posters

Part of our editorial submissions were these posters. Just like fans hang posters of their favorite celebrities on their walls, these posters also show an idealized lifestyle that can be hung on walls. On the back of the posters is our project’s manifesto.

Merch

The second part of our editorial submission were t-shirts with Britney Spears lyrics on the front and our manifesto on the back. Mockups made by Anna-Sophie Kosna. The posters and a t-shirt were wrapped in plastic and handed in as our final editorial.

behind the scenes

We bought over 120m of fabric, carpet and customized props to bring this narrative to light inside a living room. We were hands on from styling to set design to the very final products.
